This CTD data set, consisting of 47 casts, was collected in the Chukchi Sea during the F/V Alaskan Enterprise (AE10-01) cruise, August 24 - September 20, 2010 (cruise ID, CHAOZ 2010). The cruise was funded by DOI Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) through the NOAA National Marine Mammal Laboratory. Involved groups included NMML, AFSC, BOEM, PMEL and EcoFOCI.

CTD operations on this cruise were managed by EcoFOCI personnel from NOAA/PMEL. Due to a winch failure, CTD operations were limited. A Seabird SBE-911plus was deployed by hand, bottles were tripped using messengers, and limited measurements were made. Profile data from CTD instruments were processed at NOAA/PMEL/EcoFOCI using standard techniques. Data files are averaged to a 1-meter grid.

Processing Steps
  • Data Type: TEMPERATURE - WATER - CONTINUOUS MEASUREMENT [WATER TEMPERATURE] (measured); Units: degrees C; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: SeaBird SBE-911plus CTD; Sampling and Analyzing Method: The CTD operations on this cruise were limited, and instrument was deployed by hand due to an oceanographic winch failure. An SBE-19 was lowered by hand and messengers were sent to trip bottles at 3 depths (1, 15, 25 meters). Lacking a conductive cable for this operation, a full host of measurements was not possible. Bottle salt samples are collected every second or third cast for calibration. Salinity is calculated (PSS-78), from conductivity and temperature (ITS90). Sigma-t is calculated from temperature and salinity.; Data Quality Information: Data are processed and calibrations applied using Seabird Seasoft CTD software. Post-processing at PMEL includes filtering extreme outliers and extrapolation of top 3-10 meters to the surface. Each cast is visually reviewed for reasonableness, density inversions (greater than 0.02 sigma-t) caused by spurious measurements, and comparison of dual temperature and conductivity sensors. Profile data are bin-averaged to 1 meter. Nutrient samples were analyzed according to the methods of Gordon, et al (see reference below). Samples were collected in 50 ml high-density polyethylene bottles that were rinsed first with 10% HCl prior to each station, and rinsed at least three times with sample before filling. Some samples were refrigerated for 3-12 hours prior to analysis, and some frozen for later analysis.
