browse graphicPreview graphic
This dataset includes nutrient data related to algal and water samples collected between 2012 and 2014 on Maui, Hawaii. Algal tissue N%, C:N ratios, and delta N-15 values are reported for three species collected and or deployed at six study locations (Kahului Bay, Waiehu Bay, Kuau Bay, Honomanu Bay, Maalaea Bay, and Honolua Bay). Water was sampled from marine surface waters, streams, wells, coastal groundwater (beach porewater) and springs at many sites on Maui. We report the location, salinity, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, ammonium, dissolved inorganic nitrogen and delta N-15 of these water samples. In addition, we include a summary of benthic analyses including estimates of the proportion of benthic cover and calculations of diversity for all six study locations listed above.

Tissues were submitted to the SOEST Biogeochemical Stable Isotope Facility at the University of Hawaii where they were analyzed using a Costech ECS 4010 Elemental Combustion System (Costech Analytical Technologies, CA, USA) interfaced with a ThermoFinnigan DeltaXP (Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., MA, USA). Results are reported as C:N ratio.
  • Data Type: BENTHIC SPECIES - TAXA COUNTS (measured); Units: proportion; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: photograph; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Each image represented 458.8 cm2 of benthic surface after being cropped to a size of 3,148 x 2,010 pixels to remove the PVC frame. PhotoGrid software (Bird, 2001) was used to analyze each image using a point-intercept method with 25 random points per image. Benthic organisms or substrates were identified to the species level (when possible) and grouped into categories: coral, macroalgae, turf algae, crustose coralline algae, invertebrates, and abiotic substrate. The proportion of points in each category in reference to total points per transect (250 points) and per location (2500 points) was calculated. In addition to species richness (sum of unique species), Shannon’s diversity (H’) index [101], and Simpson’s dominance (λ) index were calculated.
