This dataset includes nutrient data related to algal and water samples collected between 2012 and 2014 on Maui, Hawaii. Algal tissue N%, C:N ratios, and delta N-15 values are reported for three species collected and or deployed at six study locations (Kahului Bay, Waiehu Bay, Kuau Bay, Honomanu Bay, Maalaea Bay, and Honolua Bay). Water was sampled from marine surface waters, streams, wells, coastal groundwater (beach porewater) and springs at many sites on Maui. We report the location, salinity, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, ammonium, dissolved inorganic nitrogen and delta N-15 of these water samples. In addition, we include a summary of benthic analyses including estimates of the proportion of benthic cover and calculations of diversity for all six study locations listed above.
In this study, algal bioassays, benthic community analyses, and geochemical methods were used to compare the water quality and health of reefs adjacent to various types of land use and potential nutrient sources on Maui.

Data Type: SALINITY - SURFACE and GRUONDWATER (measured); Units: psu; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: YSI - handheld multi-parameter instrument; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Yellow Springs Instruments, model V24 6600 with conductivity/temperature sensor Model 6560, OH, USA).
Data Type: NUTRIENTS (measured); Units: micromole/liter; Observation Type: laboratory analysis; Sampling Instrument: bottle; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Filtered to 0.45 micrometers and refrigerated. Analyzed at the The SOEST Laboratory for Analytical Biogeochemistry (S-LAB) at the University of Hawaii using a Seal Analytical AA3 HR Nutrient Autoanalyzer.
Data Type: DELTA NITROGEN-15 of WATER (measured); Units: per mille; Observation Type: laboratory analysis; Sampling Instrument: bottle; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Water samples filtered to 0.45 micrometers and frozen until analysis. The delta N-15 of nitrate was measured using a Finnigan MAT252 coupled to a the GasBench II at the SOEST Biogeochemical Stable Isotope Facility at the University of Hawaii .
Data Type: DELTA NITROGEN-15 of MARINE ALGAE (measured); Units: per mille; Observation Type: laboratory analysis; Sampling Instrument: bag-collection; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Algae were collected in plastic bags, cleaned in distilled water, and dried at 60 degrees C until processing. Tissues were submitted to the SOEST Biogeochemical Stable Isotope Facility at the University of Hawaii where they were analyzed using a Costech ECS 4010 Elemental Combustion System (Costech Analytical Technologies, CA, USA) interfaced with a ThermoFinnigan DeltaXP (Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., MA, USA).
Data Type: Nitrogen content of MARINE ALGAE (measured); Units: per mille; Observation Type: laboratory analysis; Sampling Instrument: bag-collection; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Algae were collected in plastic bags, cleaned in distilled water, and dried at 60 degrees C until processing.
Data Type: Carbon:Nitrogen of MARINE ALGAE (calculated); Units: none; Observation Type: laboratory analysis; Sampling Instrument: bag-collection; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Algae were collected in plastic bags, cleaned in distilled water, and dried at 60 degrees C until processing. Results are reported as C:N ratio.
Data Type: BENTHIC SPECIES - TAXA COUNTS (measured); Units: proportion; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: photograph; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Each image represented 458.8 cm2 of benthic surface after being cropped to a size of 3,148 x 2,010 pixels to remove the PVC frame. PhotoGrid software (Bird, 2001) was used to analyze each image using a point-intercept method with 25 random points per image. Benthic organisms or substrates were identified to the species level (when possible) and grouped into categories: coral, macroalgae, turf algae, crustose coralline algae, invertebrates, and abiotic substrate. The proportion of points in each category in reference to total points per transect (250 points) and per location (2500 points) was calculated. In addition to species richness (sum of unique species), Shannon’s diversity (H’) index [101], and Simpson’s dominance (λ) index were calculated.

bag - collection
Any type of bag for collection of marine flora or fauna specimen or coral or seabottom material
bottle
bottle
any type of water bottle sampling device
Generic name for water collection device; usually used to determine temperature, salinity and provide water aliquots for measurement of a wide range of parameters; often referred to by a specific type of water sampling bottle, such as a Nansen or Niskin bottle.
multi-parameter water quality sensor
multi-parameter water quality sensor
used to measure temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and other parameters
Instrument used to measure temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and other parameters, often used to measure water quality parameters. Can be a hand-held instrument or a sonde for unattended monitoring. Often used in coastal water monitoring stations. YSI is the preeminent brand (as of 2024).
