This dataset includes discrete profile measurements of dissolved inorganic carbon, total alkalinity, CTD temperature, CTD salinity, CTD oxygen, nutrients, and delta C13 made during the R/V Discovery cruise D379, ELL_2012 (EXPOCODE 74DI20120731) in the North Atlantic Ocean from 2012-07-31 to 2012-08-17. The Extended Ellett Line is a hydrographic section between Iceland and Scotland that is occupied annually by scientists from the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) and the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS), UK. The measurement programme began as a seasonally-occupied hydrographic section in the Rockall Trough in 1975, building on early surface observations made underway from ocean weather ships. In 1996 the section was extended to Iceland, sampling three basins: the Rockall Trough, the Hatton-Rockall Basin and the Iceland Basin. This report presents a summary of data from the Extended Ellett Line programme. The data are analysed to calculate time series of temperature and salinity of the upper ocean and Labrador Sea Water in the eastern subpolar gyre. The most recent Extended Ellett Line cruise (August 2012) is shown as temperature, salinity and density sections.

Processing Steps
  • Parameter or Variable: Dissolved Inorganic Carbon; Abbreviation: TCARBN; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Calculated; Replicate information: Repeated measurements on the same batch of seawater (n=3) in the lab gave consistent results (precision for the whole dataset estimated as 3 μmol kg-1).; Standardization description: In order to standardize the results, Certified Reference Materials (CRM) from A.G. Dickson, Scripps Institution of Oceanography were analysed as standards to calibrate the instrument at the beginning and end of each day of analysis. A daily correction factor was applied to all measured values according to Millero et al. (1998).; CRM batch number: 105, 119, 121.
  • Parameter or Variable: Total alkalinity; Abbreviation: TA; Observation type: discrete; In-situ / Manipulation / Response variable: In-situ observation; Measured or calculated: Measured; Type of titration: Titration with HCl (~0.10 mol/L) uses a closed cell procedure with an open cell, with a pH half cell electrode (glass bodied Orion 8101SC, Ross, USA) and an Ag/AgCl reference electrode (model 6.0729.100, Metrohm, Switzerland).; Cell type (open or closed): open cell; Curve fitting method: Non-linear curve fitting (least-squares) approach (Dickson et al., 2007); Uncertainty: Repeated measurements on the same batch of seawater (n=3) were undertaken every day prior to sample analysis in order to assess the precision of the method. The precision was estimated for the whole dataset to be 3 μmol kg-1 for DIC and 4 μmol kg-1 for TA. The accuracy of the measurement is assured by the standardization using the CRM from A.G.
