This dataset contains dissolved inorganic carbon, pH, oxygen, and other variables collected from surface underway observations during the East Coast Ocean Acidification (ECOA) Cruise. The East Coast Ocean Acidification (ECOA) Cruise on board NOAA Ship Gordon Gunter from Newport, took place in the Gulf of Maine and then along the East US coast to Miami. The effort was in support of the coastal monitoring and research objectives of the NOAA Ocean Acidification Program (OAP). The cruise was designed to obtain a snapshot of key carbon, physical, and biogeochemical parameters as they relate to ocean acidification (OA) in the coastal realm. The cruise included a series of 11 transects approximately orthogonal to the Gulf of Maine and Atlantic coasts and a comprehensive set of underway measurements along the entire transect.
To measure key carbon, physical and biogeochemical parameters in coastal waters of the Gulf of Maine and eastern coast of the US in relation to Ocean Acidification.

Detailed sampling and analyzing information: The method is based on dual isotope dilution and cavity ring-down spectroscopy (DID-CRDS). In this method, seawater is continuously sampled and mixed with a flow of NaH13CO3 solution that is also enriched in deuterated water (the spike). The isotopic composition of CO2 (delta 13C spiked_sample) derived from the DIC in the mixture, and the D/H ratio of the mixed water (delta D spiked_sample), are measured by CRDS analyzers. The D/H of the water in the mixture allows accurate estimates of the mixing ratio of the sample and the spike. [DIC] of the sample is then calculated from the mixing ratio, [DI13C] of the spike, and delta 13C spiked_sample.;

Detailed sampling and analyzing information: water flowed constantly at 100 ml/min through a gas-permeable membrane contraction cartridge (MicroModuel, Liqui-Cel Membrane). Equilibrated gasses diffused into a fused-silica capillary (2 m in length and 0.05 mm in diameter) that connects to a quadruple mass spectrometer (Pfeiffer vacuum) for ion current intensity and ratio measurements.
