NOAA's NOS/NCCOS/CCMA Biogeography Team, in collaboration with NOAA Ship Nancy Foster, federal, academic, and private sector partners conducted the 2016 Seafloor Mapping of the US Caribbean project. Several areas of interest were explored and surveyed during the field mission in the eastern Puerto Rico region. H12935 was conducted on along the southeastern Puerto Rican shelf edge using a deep water Em 710 multibeam echo sounder (mbes) at 100khz. H12936 was conducted north of the Isla de Culebra over the broad moderately shallow insular shelf using a 400 khz Reson 7125 mbes. A third opportunistic survey was conducted along the edge of the USVI insular shelf south of St. Thomas to conjoin previous NOAA Ship Nancy Foster mission surveys. During the field mission, a Remotely Operated Vehicle owned by the University of North Carolina collected HD photo and video ground validation video. Data was processed by a NOAA contractor using CARIS HIPS software. Data has all correctors applied (attitude, sound velocity) and has been reduced to mean lower low water (MLLW) using final approved tides from NOAA COOPS. Data is spatially referenced in UTM Zone 20 North, Datum WGS84. The project was conducted to meet IHO order 1 and 2 accuracy standards, dependent on the project area and depth. All users should individually evaluate the suitability of this data according to their own needs and standards.

The HD photo and video ground validation video described in the abstract were not submitted as part of the archival package.
Purpose The mission's purpose is to better understand the resources within the surveyed reef habitats, and ultimately develop species utilization models linking physical habitats with biological information. The multibeam backscatter, multibeam bathymetry, and ground truth video footage collected during the 2016 mission will be used internally to characterize sea floor topography and to create benthic habitat maps, helping NOAA to meet its mapping commitment to the US Coral Reef Task Force. The resulting publicly-distributed data is also a contribution to the greater scientific community interested in the Caribbean seafloor.

Processing Steps
  • Data Type: Water Depth (measured); Units: meter; Observation Type: model output; Sampling Instrument: multibeam sonar; Sampling and Analyzing Method: A 400 khz Reson 7125 MBES system was used to map the shallow areas (10-90m) and a 100 khz Em 710 MBES system was used to map the deeper areas (>90m). All bathymetry was corrected for tides, sound velocity, and vessel motion. Bathymetry was produced using CARIS HIPS and SIPS 9.1 and exported to geotiff format.; Data Quality Information: Lead Line and cross line soundings were collected to verify water depths. A Combined Uncertainty Bathymetric Estimator (CUBE) grid was created and rigorously cleaned of noise and artifacts. Final bathymetry underwent QAQC from Atlantic Hydrographic Branch.
  • Data Type: Backscatter (measured); Units: dB; Observation Type: model output; Sampling Instrument: multibeam sonar; Sampling and Analyzing Method: A 400 khz Reson 7125 MBES system was used to map the shallow areas (10-90m) and a 100 khz Em 710 MBES system was used to map the deeper areas (>90m). Backscatter was produced by processing the snippets data in beam time series using Fledermaus Geocoder Toolbox (FMGT) and exported as a geotiff.; Data Quality Information: Backscatter is uncalibrated and relative to sonar unit. A NOAA GIS analyst produced the imagery and adjusted histograms for dynamic range. Ground validation pending on ROV video analysis.
  • Data Type: Video Transect Images (measured); Units: HD Video; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Remotely Operated Vehicle; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Mohawk ROV with Insite Pacific Mini Zeus II Color HD Video and Kongsberg OE14-408 digital still camera.
