This data set includes census based carbonate budget data that was collected in coral reef habitats located near Islamorada in the Florida Keys. Surveys (based on Perry et al 2012) were conducted at Cheeca Rocks near the Map CO2 buoy. Six transect surveys (10m each) were conducted to quantify benthic cover, macrobioerosion, and microbioerosion. Ten parrotfish surveys were also conducted to account for parrotfish erosion rates. This carbonate budget data along with other sea water chemistry data were collected for the Class III monitoring site.
Provide high‐quality carbonate budget data for US coral reef areas, in close partnership with the larger CRCP, NCRMP, and OAP efforts.

Data Type: Depth (measured); Units: feet; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Depth reader on dive computer.
Data Type: Taxon cover (measured); Units: cm; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Transect survey; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Benthic type was noted for each individual chain link (cm each) along 10 meter transect.
Data Type: Transect Percent Cover (calculated); Units: percent; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Transect survey; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Percent cover calculated based on taxon cover and length of rugosity chain.
Data Type: Sponge cover (measured); Units: cm2; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: 1 square meter quadrat; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Bioeroding sponge cover counted in quadrat during transect surveys.
Data Type: Sponge Percent Cover (calculated); Units: percent; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Transect survey; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Percent cover calculated based on sponge cover in area surveyed with quadrat along transect.
Data Type: Planar Bioerosion (calculated); Units: kg/m2/yr; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: 1 square meter quadrat; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Calculated based on previously published sponge erosion rates by species.
Data Type: Rugosity (measured); Units: meter; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Chain; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Chain laid out over benthos along ten meter transect line. Total chain length (m) is divided by linear length to calculate rugosity.
Data Type: Microbioerosion rate (measured); Units: kg/m2/yr; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Chain; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Chain transects are used to quantify rugosity and available subrate (for microborers to colonize). These values and published erosion rates for endolithic microborers are calculated to estimate biological substrate erosion.
Data Type: Parrotfish Bioerosion (calculated); Units: kg/m2/yr; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Transect survey; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Calculated using mean parrotfish abundance of all 10 transects.

chain
A 10-meter chain to be used in a linear transect method of measurement
A 1-meter chain may be laid across a coral reef surface so that it follows the topography of the coral reef surface with descriptions of the coral made where each link touches the coral.
