Inventory of Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) in the northern Gulf of Mexico (2016) (NCEI Accession 0159588)

This dataset contains information about continuously operating reference stations (CORS) and the networks that
they belong to throughout the Gulf of Mexico region, compiled from responses by network operators. Station
information includes the 4-character site ID, location, type of equipment, specifics on communication, and
redundancy on power and communication of the station. Network information includes ownership and maintenance
of the stations, if any stations are geodetically tied or co-located with a water level observing station,
where the data is stored, future expansion or reduction plans, and what the current needs and gaps an
operator faces with the network. Stations are continuously being installed, updated and un-installed so this
dataset is only a completed snapshot of stations in 2016. This dataset should not be used as a status map of
stations in a local area, if status is needed on a specific location, sensor map URLs for each of the
networks can be found in the general question answers.

Purpose Continuously operating reference stations (CORS) are an integral piece in providing continuously monitored spatial data to a global reference frame that makes the CORS network a crucial necessity for understanding subsidence and sea-level rise along the coast. The Northern Gulf of Mexico Sentinel Site Cooperative (NGOM SSC), with funding provided by NOAA Gulf Regional Collaboration Team, conducted an inventory of CORS in the summer of 2016 and compiled additional relevant metadata. The primary goal of this inventory was to capture not only geospatial information of the CORS infrastructure, but also specific parameters of information of each station and to identify the gaps in the existing network to observe sea-level rise at local scales. The completed inventory provides a foundational blueprint that can be used by NGOM SSC to inform decision-makers of where additional infrastructure is necessary for coastal management application. This dataset provides a synthesized snapshot of coverage, regardless of network, for end-users to determine coverage of high-accuracy geospatial information in specific areas throughout the Gulf region.
