El Niño Rapid Response (ENRR) Field Campaign: Surface Meteorological Data from Kiritimati Island, January-March 2016 (NCEI Accession 0161526)

browse graphicPreview graphic
This dataset contains surface meteorological data from Kiritimati (Christmas) Island, collected 25 January to 28 March 2016. These data have been corrected for known measurement issues when possible and replaced with bad/missing flags when that was not possible, and have been visually screened for physically unreasonable values. These data were collected at (2.01°N, 157.40°W), at an elevation of 3.6 m ASL (above sea level). The averaging/collection period is 2 minutes through 2016-02-11 04:05:43 UTC, and changes to 1 minute starting 2016-02-11 04:06:43 UTC. The following variables are reported: time at end of averaging or collection period (UTC); air_pressure (hPa); air_temperature (C); relative_humidity (%); wind_speed (m s-1); wind_from_direction (degree); wind_speed_of_gust (m s-1); rain (mm); battery_voltage (V).

During January through March 2016, scientists led by the NOAA/Earth System Research Laboratory's Physical Sciences Division conducted NOAA's El Niño Rapid Response (ENRR) Field Campaign. Its goal was to document the ongoing El Niño episode in great detail, and in ways that could help researchers better understand the ways in which this El Niño affected weather in the United States and the impact of various high-resolution observations on weather forecasts. Intensive observations were collected over the central and eastern Pacific ocean from land, ocean, and airborne platforms during the very strong 2015-2016 El Niño.

Purpose These data provide a high-resolution view of surface meteorology conditions in the heart of the warm near-equatorial waters during the late stages of the 2015-2016 El Niño. They are intended for use in meteorological, oceanographic, hydrologic, and biological studies of the central equatorial Pacific during strong El Niño conditions.
