The data in this file comes from a survey of adult residents in Hawaii. The survey was conducted for a random stratified sample of households on the islands of Oahu, Hawaii, Maui, Kauai, Molokai, and Lanai in Hawaii in the year 2014. These data were collected to record baseline human dimensions information and socioeconomic characteristics of Hawaii’s coral reef adjacent populations such as human use patterns, management support/opposition, and knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of coral reefs/coral reef management. These baseline data are being used as a starting point for socioeconomic monitoring of Hawaii’s coral reefs. Data were collected through the telephone random digit dial survey method, and the total sample size for this survey was 2,240 with a response rate (number of complete interviews divided by the number of eligible reporting units in the sample) of 1.5% and a cooperation rate (proportion of all cases interviewed divided by all eligible units ever contacted) of 28.6%.
The National Coral Reef Monitoring Program (NCRMP) details a long-term approach to provide an ecosystem perspective via monitoring climate, fish, benthic, and socioeconomic variables in a consistent and integrated manner. The NCRMP in intended to coordinate various Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP) biological, physical, and human dimensions activities into a cohesive NOAA-wide effort. Through the implementation of the NCRMP, NOAA will be able to clearly and concisely communicate results of national-scale monitoring to national, state, and territorial policy makers, resource managers, and the public on a periodic basis.

Data were collected via telephone using random digit dialing, and the total sample size for this survey was 2,240 with a response rate of 1.5%. For a complete description of the data collection method, see Gorstein et al. (in review). Resident surveys took place in Hawaii on the islands of Hawaii, Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Molokai, and Lanai at the end of 2014. The survey sampled adults, eighteen years or older, who live on one of the six above islands for at least 3 months out of the year. Surveys were conducted via telephone in November of 2014. Phone number lists were purchased for the six islands and included both landline and cell phone numbers. Each number from the list was called up to five times, at which point the number was dropped from the calling process if it had not yet been answered. Contracted surveyors used Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI) software and offered the survey in English. A total of 567,152 unique phone numbers were called over the course of the survey, resulting in a total of 2,240 interviews (51.5% cell, 48.5% landline) for a response rate of approximately 0.4% of all numbers dialed, or 1.5% of eligible numbers (not including fax lines, out of service, or non-residents). No names or personally identifiable information were collected during surveying. As a result of the survey under or over-sampling the Hawaiian Islands in relation to the 2010 US Census population distribution, post-stratification sampling weights were calculated to make the sample representative of Hawaii’s population distribution across the islands. In order to compare the Hawaii population to the sample, data on the populations for each island were derived from the 2010 US Census. These post-stratification sampling weights were designed to fix the under-representation of Oahu residents. Data analysis of both survey and secondary data included descriptive analyses (e.g., measures of central tendency, examination of distribution), as well as examinations of statistical relationships between variables (e.g., cross tabulations, correlation, regression analyses).
