Eastward and northward components of ocean current and water temperature collected from moorings in the vicinity of Quinault Canyon in the North East Pacific Coast from 1981-10-02 to 1982-01-19 (NCEI Accession 0164026)
The University of Washington maintained 5 current meter moorings, QC811 through QC815 in and around Quinault Canyon. Current meters were all Aanderaa (AA) instruments which measured speed, direction and temperature. The AA data was sampled in 20 minute intervals. Speed and direction were measured and rotated to true North. Data was first edited for spurious values, then speed and direction were independently filtered with a 5 point binomial filter spanning approximately 1.5 hours and resolved into u and v components. Purpose | The purpose of this study was to provide information about the circulation in and around canyons and discover to what extent canyons affect the regional shelf circulation. This is important because Astoria and Quinault Canyon, located on the Washington coast, provide the primary conduits by which land derived sediments and pollutants reach the deep ocean. Canyons also enhance upwelling. |
