Processing Steps
  • Data Type: water depth (measured); Units: m; Observation Type: other; Sampling Instrument: shipboard echosounder; Sampling and Analyzing Method: depth measured at sample site with echosounder; Data Quality Information: compared with chart.
  • Data Type: SEDIMENT - INTERVAL GRAIN SIZE (measured); Units: percent; Observation Type: laboratory analysis; Sampling Instrument: malvern size analyzer 2000; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Sediment sample dispersed, sonified then measured. Percent of sample in designated size range; Data Quality Information: Each sample run in triplicate, average reported.
  • Data Type: ORGANIC MATTER - WEIGHT PERCENT (measured); Units: percent; Observation Type: laboratory analysis; Sampling Instrument: CHNS Analyzer; Sampling and Analyzing Method: CHNS Analysis for organic carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulfur. About 0.5 grams of sediment was placed into a small beaker to which 20 mL of 0.1M HCl was added. This was agitated and then allowed to settle before pouring off the HCl solution. Samples were then rinsed with two aliquots of deionized water to rinse away most of the HCl and placed in a drying oven at 65°C until dried. Samples were then analyzed on a Carlo_Erba 1108 CHNS Analyzer. The instrument was calibrated with sulphanilamide. Samples were corrected for the instrument blank. Precision of analysis was determined on a reference LIS sample with relative standard deviation for organic carbon, nitrogen and sulfur were 1.6%, 2.1% and 5.5% respectively.; Data Quality Information: standards.
  • Data Type: NITROGEN - ORGANIC (measured); Units: percent; Observation Type: laboratory analysis; Sampling Instrument: CHNS Analyzer; Sampling and Analyzing Method: CHNS Analysis for organic carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulfur. • Data Type: Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (QAC) (measured); Units: nanogram per liter; Observation Type: laboratory analysis; Sampling Instrument: HPLC tof-ms; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Salts of QACs are used as active agents in detergent formulations, fabric softener products, microbiocides, and personal care products, and they find application in a variety of industrial processes. in this study 20 individual QAC compounds were measured: DADMAC C8:C8, DADMAC C8:C10, DADMAC C10:C10, BAC C12, BAC C14, BAC C16, BAC C18, ATMAC C12, ATMAC C14, ATMAC C16, ATMAC C18, ATMAC C20, ATMAC C22, DTDMAC C12:C12, DTDMAC C12:C14, DTDMAC C14:C14, DTDMAC C14:C16, DTDMAC C16:C16, DTDMAC C16:C18, DTDMAC C18:C18. Total QAC is the sum of these individual QACs. Method is described in Li and Brownawell, 2009, and Li, 2009. Citations: Li, X. and B.J. Brownawell (2009). Analysis of quaternary ammonium compounds in estuarine sediments by LC-TofF-MS: Very high positive mass defects of alkylamine ions as powerful diagnostic tools for identification and structural elucidation. Analytical Chemistry 81: 7926-7935. Li, X., 2009. Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) in marine sediment: detection, occurrence and application as geochemical tracer. PhD Dissertation, School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, Stony Brook University, NY, 232 pp.; Data Quality Information: The Reporting Limit (RL) for each compound varies daily and depends on (1) the calibration standards (calculated concentrations must be greater than the lowest calibration standard used), (2) the noise level (the peak height determined must be significantly larger than the noise level of the run) and (3) the blank (the peak height determined must be significantly larger than the concurrent blank). The value 99999 is used when the calculated concentration is less than the RL. Contact roger.flood@stonybrook.edu if more information is needed.
