Phase II in-stream sediment measurements in the Talakhaya watershed on Rota, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands from 2016-03-09 to 2017-05-11 (NCEI Accession 0166379)

browse graphicPreview graphic
The dataset includes TSS (mg/L), turbidity (NTU), stream level (ft), and precipitation (in) data collected at multiple stations across five streams and at four rain gauges during Phase II (2016-2017) of the Talakhaya stream monitoring project. Secondary water quality data was also collected at the same time that turbidity measurements were made including (pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and temperature).

Two spreadsheets with previous data collected by others (University of Guam) during Phase I of the project (2013-2014) is also included in the dataset in order to keep the complete set of data together. That dataset includes precipitation and stream level (same as Phase II) as well as a slightly different set of water quality parameters including, temperature, pH, pHmv, ORP, mS/cm, turbidity, DO, and TDS. Stream stage discharge/flow relationship calculations are also included in Phase I data.

Processing Steps
  • Data Type: PRECIPITATION (measured); Units: inch; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: rain gauge; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Rainfall data were collected from each of the four rain gauges. The gauges recorded the date and time of every 0.01 inch of rain; these data were combined to calculate hourly rainfall, which was then averaged across all rain gauges. Rainfall was used to show the relationship between rain events and stream levels/flows, as well as sediment levels in the stream.
  • Data Type: SEDIMENTS - DRY WEIGHT (measured); Units: mg/L; Observation Type: laboratory analysis; Sampling Instrument: sediment sampler - grab; Sampling and Analyzing Method: The TSS sampling method involved collecting a water sample from 6-12 inches below the water surface by hand. The TSS sample volume was one liter (in HDPE or PP screw-cap bottles). At least one field duplicate was collected each sampling event. A one-inch air space was provided in the bottles to allow for proper mixing of the sample at time of analysis. Bottles were labeled and placed on ice during transportation, with date, time, location, and sampler name on recorded on the field data sheet. The samples had a maximum holding time of seven days from the time of collection to time of analysis – the field team sent the samples via airplane to the BECQ lab on Saipan for processing. Non-detect readings from the lab were recorded as 0 mg/L.
  • Data Type: turbidity (measured); Units: NTU; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Turbidity Meter; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Turbidity was measured at least monthly when the streams were flowing using a multi-parameter water quality meter (Phase I – HORIBA meter.
  • Data Type: DEPTH - SENSOR (measured); Units: ft; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: pressure sensors; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Stream water level, also referred to as “stage,” was collected with HOBO® Level Loggers placed in the stream bed at each in-stream station to record water pressure, as well as somewhere near each stream to record atmospheric (i.e., air) pressure. These loggers Talakhaya Watershed Soil Loss Assessment, Phase II 26 are ideal for measuring levels in shallow (0-13 ft range) freshwater systems. The pressures were recorded continuously on a 1-hour interval and used to determine stream stage.
  • Data Type: TEMPERATURE [WATER TEMPERATURE] (measured); Units: C; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: water quality sensors; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Collected with BECQ’s YSI® meter. Data were recorded by hand on field data sheets for entering into a spreadsheet back in the office.
  • Data Type: SALINITY - SURFACE WATER (measured); Units: %o; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: water quality sensors; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Collected with BECQ’s YSI® meter. Data were recorded by hand on field data sheets for entering into a spreadsheet back in the office.
  • Data Type: DISSOLVED OXYGEN (measured); Units: percent; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: water quality sensors; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Collected with BECQ’s YSI® meter. Data were recorded by hand on field data sheets for entering into a spreadsheet back in the office.
  • Data Type: pH (measured); Units: unitless; Observation Type: in situ; Sampling Instrument: water quality sensors; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Collected with BECQ’s YSI® meter. Data were recorded by hand on field data sheets for entering into a spreadsheet back in the office.
