The CROSS experiment was the first of several experiments carried out in the Southern California Basin Study between October 1985 and July 1990. Ten current meter moorings were deployed in a line crossing the Santa Monica basin from approximately 3.5 kilometers offshore in Santa Monica Bay to 60 kilometers offshore.
Data submitted is from 7 moorings (C2A, C3, C4, C5, C5A, C6, C7). Data for the remaining 3 moorings (C1, C1A, C2) was previously submitted to NODC (accession number 9800021).
Current meters were a mix of Aanderaa (AA) and Vector Measuring Current Meters (VMCM) instruments. The AA meters measured speed, direction, temperature and, in some cases, conductivity with a sample interval of 20 minutes. The VMCM data (previously submitted, accession number 9800021) was sampled in 15 minute intervals.

Purpose The DOE West Coast Basin study (CaBS) was funded by the Department of Energy grant # DE-FG05-85-ER-60333 to the University of Washington under the direction of Dr. Barbara Hickey. The overall purpose of CaBS was to investigate the transport pathways of energy related pollutants from the coast. The purpose of the CROSS experiment was to investigate the circulation in the Southern California Bight, in particular, the relationship between shelf/slope water and basin water.

Data was sampled in 20 minute intervals, then edited for spurious values. Speed and direction were independently filtered with a 5 point binomial filter, then resolved into u and v components. U and v components were lo pass filtered with a cosine Lanczos filter with a half power point of approximately 2.5 hours to suppress high frequency signals. The data was decimated to hourly values and interpolated to even hours. The first and last 6 points were deleted. The time base is GMT.; Data Quality Information: Data were plotted and visually inspected for spurious values.

If the pressure measurements were questionable or there was no pressure sensor a constant value approximately equal to the depth was used. The data were lo pass filtered with a cosine Lanczos filter with a half power point of approximately 2.5 hours to suppress high frequency signals. The data was decimated to hourly values and interpolated to even hours. The first and last 6 points were deleted. The time base is GMT.; Data Quality Information: Data were plotted and visually inspected for spurious values.
