Water temperature from XBT taken from research vessel Italica in the Southern Ocean and Southwest Pacific Ocean from 2012-01-13 to 2012-01-19 (NCEI Accession 0167834)

Vertical temperature profiles were taken in January 2012 from research vessel Italica during an oceanographic cruise between New Zealand and the Ross Sea in the framework of the Southern Ocean Chokepoints Italian Contribution (SOChIC) project of the Italian National Antarctic Research Programme (PNRA) using Sippican T7 Expendable Bathythermograph (XBT) with a vertical resolution of 65 cm and a maximum nominal depth of 760 m. Ship speed lower than 15 kn allows the probe to reach about 900 m depth. The transects were completed during 6 days to provide a synoptic picture of the thermal structure of the upper Southern Ocean. A regular 15 nm spatial sampling rate was adopted across the frontal regions of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. All temperature profiles are quality controlled for consistency between adjacent profiles and by spike editing. Data are in TXT format.

Processing Steps
  • Parameter or Variable: WATER TEMPERATURE (measured); Units: degrees Celsius; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: bathythermograph - XBT; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Sippican T7 probes provided temperature profiles with a vertical resolution of about 70 cm and a maximum nominal depth of 760 m. Ship speed lower than 15 kn allowed the probe to reach about 900 m depth. Average spatial resolution of launches is 15 nm.; Data Quality Method: Temperature profiles have been extensively analyzed through quality control procedures as comparisons between adjacent profiles and spike editing. A final visual check was performed on the profiles..
