This CTD data set, consisting of 70 casts, was collected in the Chukchi Sea ice cruise mb11-01 from the fishing vessel Mystery Bay (August 15 - September 10, 2011). The cruise was funded by DOI Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) through the NOAA National Marine Mammal Laboratory. CTD operations on this cruise were managed by Ecosystems and Fisheries-Oceanography Coordinated Investigations (EcoFOCI) personnel from NOAA/PMEL as part of the Department of Interior (DOI)/BOEM Arctic Whale Ecology Study (ARCWEST) and Chukchi Sea Acoustics, Oceanography, and Zooplankton (CHAOZ) programs. Profile data from CTD instruments were processed at NOAA/PMEL/EcoFOCI using standard techniques. Data from bottle samples include phosphate, silicate, nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, and chlorophyll. Chlorophyll data are submitted separately through NOAA/AFSC. Data are on a 1-meter vertical grid and combine both averaged CTD profile data and bottle samples, where missing data are listed as 1e+35. CTD data contact: Phyllis Stabeno, Peggy Sullivan. Nutrient and bottle data contact: Calvin Mordy. Chlorophyll data contact: Jeffrey M. Napp. Data are in CSV format.

Processing Steps
  • Parameter or Variable: WATER TEMPERATURE 1 (measured); Units: degrees C; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: SeaBird SBE-911plus CTD; Sampling and Analyzing Method: At each CTD location, the rosette was lowered to 10 meters to equilibrate, brought to surface, then deployed to a close-to-bottom depth, at a rate of ~30m/minute, and ~50m/minute below ~150 meters depth. Profiles were collected on the downcast using dual SeaBird temperature sensors calibrated to ITS-90 temperature.; Data Quality Method: Data were processed and calibrations applied using SeaBird Seasoft software and pre- and post-cruise calibration data. Post-processing at PMEL included filtering extreme outliers and extrapolation of top 3-10 meters to the surface. Each cast was visually reviewed for reasonableness, density inversions (greater than 0.02 sigma-t) caused by spurious measurements, and comparison of dual temperature and conductivity sensor data. Profile data were bin-averaged to 1 meter..
