This dataset contains sea surface temperature and salinity data collected from 2010 to 2017 in the South Atlantic Ocean and Southern Ocean from S.A. Agulhas and Agulhas-II research vessels, in the framework of South African National Antarctic Programme (SANAP), South African Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) and Italian National Antarctic Research Programme (PNRA) scientific activities. Measurements have been obtained through thermosalinograph (TSG) during several cruises to both Antarctica and sub-Antarctic islands. On-board TSG devices have been regularly calibrated and continuously monitored in-between cruises; no appreciable sensor drift emerged. Independent water samples taken along the cruises have been used to validate the data; salinity measurement error was a few hundredths of a unit on the practical salinity scale. A careful quality control allowed to discard bad data for each single campaign. Furthermore, a sea ice flag has been included in the dataset for identifying valid data which could have been slightly affected by sea ice contamination.

Processing Steps
  • Parameter or Variable: CONDUCTIVITY (measured); Units: Siemens/meter; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: thermosalinographs; Sampling and Analyzing Method: For each cruise, the full resolution thermo-salinometer dataset has been processed and undersampled with a median filter over 1 minute interval..
  • Parameter or Variable: SALINITY - SURFACE WATER (calculated); Units: psu; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: thermosalinographs; Sampling and Analyzing Method: For each cruise, the full resolution thermo-salinometer dataset has been processed and undersampled with a median filter over 1 minute interval.; Data Quality Method: Firstly, an automatic detection of unreliable values was performed using selected thresholds criteria on conductivity, SSS and SST values (QC-1). Then, quality flags (good, suspicious, bad) were attributed to data basing on the detection of insufficient seawater flow (i.e. difference larger than 0.2°C between SST and SSTH while SSS remained nearly constant), the contamination by air bubbles, the presence of sea-ice (QC-2). Finally, a visual inspection of individual campaigns was carried out, with a specific attention to data flagged as suspicious in the QC-2 (QC-3). Validation through comparison with bottle samples..
  • Parameter or Variable: TEMPERATURE - WATER - CONTINUOUS MEASUREMENT [WATER TEMPERATURE] (measured); Units: degrees Celsius; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: thermosalinographs; Sampling and Analyzing Method: For each cruise, the full resolution thermo-salinometer dataset has been processed and undersampled with a median filter over 1 minute interval..
  • Parameter or Variable: TEMPERATURE - WATER - CONTINUOUS MEASUREMENT [WATER TEMPERATURE] at HULL (measured); Units: degrees Celsius; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: thermometer; Sampling and Analyzing Method: For each cruise, the full resolution thermo-salinometer dataset has been processed and undersampled with a median filter over 1 minute interval..
  • Parameter or Variable: Seaice flag (measured); Units: binary: 0 = NO ICE ; 1 = scatter SEA ICE ;; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: visual observation / Satellite information; Sampling and Analyzing Method: The sea ice flag indicates data which could have been slightly affected by scatter seaice contamination, as recorded by cruise reports or satellite seaice maps..
