Dataset Overview | National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI)

Sea surface salinity and temperature, microplastics, pCO2 and chlorophyll collected from Turn the Tide on Plastic and AkzoNobel and meteorologic data collected by Turn the Tide on Plastic, Dongfeng Race Team and 5 other teams during the Volvo Ocean Race 2017-2018 in the Mediterranean Sea, the North and South Atlantic Ocean, South Indian Ocean, West and South Pacific Ocean and others from 2017-10-22 to 2018-07-06 (NCEI Accession 0170967)

This dataset contains surface oceanographic and meteorological data collected in situ from the Leg 0-4 and 6-12 of the Volvo Ocean Race 2017/18. The oceanographic data were collected onboard "Turn the Tide on Plastic" and team "AkzoNobel". The meteorological data were collected by Dongfeng Race Team, Team Brunel, Vestas 11th Hour Racing, Sun Hung Kai Scallywag, Turn the Tide on Plastic, Mapfre and Team AkzoNobel. The data variables include microplastics, pCO2, chlorophyll, sea surface temperature and salinity, true wind speed and direction, air temperature, air pressure and others. The pCO2 data was calibrated daily with a zero calibration and in every port with a standard gas. The data was calculated as one minute averages with a variation in difference below 0.1. The oceanographic instrument used is an OceanPack RACE manufactured by SubCtech in Kiel.

In this accession, NCEI has archived multiple versions of these data. The latest (and best) version of these data has the largest version number.
Purpose Due to this project we got a unique data set from remote and infrequent measured Oceans. We gathered data from many different Oceans within 9 months of data collection by team "Turn the Tide on Plastic". For Leg 7, 9-11 team "AkzoNobel" joined data sampling as a second system for further comparison.
