Processing Steps
  • Parameter or Variable: Dissolved Inorganic Carbon; Abbreviation: TCARBN; Unit: UMOL/KG; Observation type: Discrete, bottle; Measured or calculated: Measured; Sampling instrument: CTD911 and 12L Niskin bottle; Analyzing instrument: Apollo Scitech AS-C2; Detailed sampling and analyzing information: Discrete DIC samples were collected from throughout the water column using 12 L Niskin bottles mounted on a 24-bottle rosette equipped with a SeaBird CTD 911. Surface samples were collected at 3-5 m depth, from within the surface mixed layer. We transferred seawater from each Niskin bottle into a single 250 mL borosilicate glass bottle for analysis of both DIC and TAlk. 1 mL of seawater was removed from each sample bottle to allow for thermal expansion, and then 100 uL of saturated mercuric chloride solution was added to halt biological activity. The bottles were then sealed using Apiezon® L greased ground-glass stoppers. Samples were stored at 4 °C in the dark until they were analyzed after the cruise. Briefly, for DIC analysis, samples were analyzed at room temperatures. Each seawater sample (0.5 mL) was acidified using phosphoric acid and the evolved CO2 gas was extracted and carried by pure N2 gas to an infrared CO2 detector (Li-Cor 6262) for quantification. For each DIC sample, sub-samples were sequentially analyzed 2 or 3 times until we obtained two replicates with a precision within 0.1%. The average of the two values is reported. The precision of the DIC measurements was +/- 2 umol/kg. The accuracies of the DIC measurements were determined by routine analysis of certified reference material (CRM) provided by A. G. Dickson, Scripps Institution of Oceanography.; Standardization description: The accuracies of the DIC measurements were determined by routine analysis of certified reference material (CRM) provided by A. G. Dickson, Scripps Institution of Oceanography.; Standardization frequency: Every several hours; CRM manufacturer: Andrew Dickson Laboratory at Scripps Institution of Oceanography; Preservation method: Saturated solution of HgCl2; Preservative volume: 100 micro-liter HgCl2; Uncertainty: +/- 2 umol/kg; Quality flag convention: WOCE quality control flags are used: 2 = good value, 3 = questionable value, 4 = bad value; Method reference: Chen, B., W.-J. The bottles were then sealed using Apiezon® L greased ground-glass stoppers. Samples were stored at 4 °C in the dark until they were analyzed after the cruise. TAlk was determined on 25 mL seawater sample by potentiometric titration, using 0.1 M hydrochloric acid and an open-cell titration system. All TAlk samples were analyzed in pre-thermostated (25 °C) glass cells. For each TAlk sample, sub-samples were sequentially analyzed 2 or 3 times until we obtained two replicates with a precision within 0.1%. The average of the two values is reported. The precision of the TAlk measurements was +/- 2 umol/kg. The accuracies of the TAlk measurements were determined by routine analysis of certified reference material (CRM) provided by A. G.
