National Coral Reef Monitoring Program: Water Temperature Data from Subsurface Temperature Recorders (STRs) deployed at coral reef sites along the Florida Reef Tract from 2013-12-12 to 2016 12-12 (NCEI Accession 0171795)
This archive package contains water temperature data collected using subsurface temperature recorders (STRs) that aid in the monitoring of seawater temperature variability at permanent coral reef sites along the Florida Reef Tract as part of the NOAA National Coral Reef Monitoring Program (NCRMP). High-accuracy temperature loggers made by SeaBird Electronics (SBE) are deployed on the reef for a period of 3 years at depths ranging from 0 to 20 meters along depth transects at Ocean and Climate Change monitoring survey sites. When a STR is recovered, typically another STR is deployed in the same location. Raw data contains temperatures collected every 5-minutes. Temperature data are archived by region, location, depth and year recovered.
The temperature data provided in this data set were collected from STRs deployed at existing long-term monitoring sites during the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML), Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP) led NCRMP missions. A majority of the temperature data are from the STRs deployed 2013 and collected in 2016. However, there is 1 STR data set that only contains temperatures from 2015 to 2016 due to the inability to deploy this instrument during earlier field missions.

Purpose | The NOAA National Coral Reef Monitoring Program (NCRMP) details a long-term approach to provide an ecosystem perspective via monitoring climate, fish, benthic, and socioeconomic variables in a consistent and integrated manner. The NCRMP is intended to coordinate various NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP) biological, physical, and human dimensions activities into a cohesive NOAA-wide effort. Through the implementation of the NCRMP, NOAA will be able to clearly and concisely communicate results of national-scale monitoring to national, state, and territorial policy makers, resource managers, and the public on a periodic basis. To support a long-term Coral Reef Conservation Program for sustainable management and conservation of coral reef ecosystems water temperature time series data—along with other data collected at the survey sites (archived separately under NCRMP)—are used to help scientists assess and understand how coral reefs monitored by the NOAA Coral Reef Ecosystem Program (CREP) are responding to thermal stress. |
