        abstract:  Surface current velocities representative of the upper 2 m of the water column were collected in the northeastern Chukchi Sea using high-frequency radar systems during the ice free seasons of 2012 - 2014. Hourly data from August through October of each year are included at a spatial resolution of 6 km.
        purpose:  These data were collected in support of BOEM OCE Study 2017-065 entitled "Characterization of the Circulation on the Continental Shelf Areas of the Northeastern Chukchi and Western Beaufort Seas" in order to evaluate general circulation patterns as well as surface v subsurface flow.

                description:  Parameter or Variable: Surface Current Velocity (measured); Units: cm/s; Observation Category: remote sensing; Sampling Instrument: radar - high frequency oceanographic; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Surface currents were measured at 6km spatial resolution using 4 - 5 MHz CODAR Ocean Sensors radar systems (Paduan and Washburn, 2013).; Data Quality Method: One-dimensional radial currents >150 cm/s were flagged, as were velocities exceeding three standard deviations from the temporal mean of each point before calculating the two-dimensional surface current velocity. Optimal interpolation was applied to the data set following Kim et al. (2008). Grid points were to have >60% temporal coverage and a normalized skill of >0.7 following Fang et al. (2015)..
