abstract: A Group for High Resolution Sea Surface Temperature (GHRSST) Level 2P dataset based on multi-channel sea surface temperature (SST) retrievals generated in real-time from the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) on the European Meteorological Operational-B (MetOp-B)satellite (launched 17 Sep 2012). The European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), Ocean and Sea Ice Satellite Application Facility (OSI SAF) is producing SST products in near real time from METOP/IASI. The Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) measures in the infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum at a horizontal resolution of 12 km at nadir up to 40km over a swath width of about 2,200 km. With 14 orbits in a sun-synchronous mid-morning orbit (9:30 Local Solar Time equator crossing, descending node) global observations can be provided twice a day. The SST retrieval is performed and provided by the IASI L2 processor at EUMETSAT headquarters. The product format is compliant with the GHRSST Data Specification (GDS) version 2.

description: Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer Developed by the French Space Agency CNES, IASI is a state-of-the-art, sophisticated sounding instrument that is used for global measurements of atmospheric temperature and moisture with unprecedented accuracy and spectral resolution to improve Numerical weather prediction. It is a key payload element of the MetOp series of European meteorological polar-orbit satellites. The first flight model was launched in 2006 onboard the first European meteorological polar-orbiting satellites, MetOp-A. The second instrument, mounted on the MetOp-B satellite, was lanuched in September 2012. The third instrument will be mounted on the MetOp-C satellite with launch scheduled for October 2018. The measurement technique is based on passive IR remote sensing using an accurately calibrated Fourier Transform Spectrometer operating in the 3.7 - 15.5 µm spectral range and an associated infrared imager operating in the 10.3 - 12.5 µm spectral range. The optical configuration of the sounder is based on a Michelson interferometer. The integrated infrared imager allows the co-registration of the IASI sounder with AVHRR imager on-board MetOp.
