abstract: This dataset contains bottle data for dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA) for the period January 2016 through December 2023. The bottle samples were collected approximately every two weeks, weather permitting, from approximately 20 cm below the sea surface at the four buoys comprising our network. Commonly challenging weather and sea state conditions at the Kaneohe buoy have rendered the collection of bottle-validation samples more difficult, hence fewer data are available for this station. Collection of samples at the CRIMP-2, Ala Wai, and Kilo Nalu buoys, however, has been more readily achievable and proportionally more data are available for these buoys.

Analysis procedure Jan 2016 - August 2018: Sample is placed in waterbath at 20 degrees celcius, before sample analysis, junk seawater samples and blanks are measured until the instrument is stable, then a CRM is measured. All bottles are measured in duplicate, and a triplicate is added if the difference between duplicates is more than 3µmol/kg. Every 3 sample bottles (usually after 6 runs), a CRM is measured to check for stability of the instrument. DIC samples for CRIMP-2 between 06/02/16 and 3/12/17 were measured at SIO using a default salinity of 35. For all other DIC samples, buoy or conductivity probe measurements were used to determine salinity. Analysis procedure since September 2018: Before sample analysis, junk seawater samples were measured until the instrument was stable, then a calibration curve was run using the reference value in µmol/L (calculated from reported CRM salinty and temperaure in the bottle at the time of analysis, measured with a hand-held Fluke 51 II thermometer). All samples were run 4-5 times with 0.75mL volume, until three repeats were <0.05% apart. Every three sample bottles, a CRM was run, and the instrument was recalibrated approximately every 4 hours. Density was calculated using sample salinity from the buoy measurement at the time of sampling when available, and using salinity measured with a VanEssen CTD Diver in the laboratory otherwise; and using temperature of the bottle at the time of analysis measured with a hand-held Fluke 51 II thermometer as well.; Replicate information: Single samples collected, duplicates or triplicates run from the same bottle.; Standardization description: Jan 2016-August 2018: Batch correction with CRMs. Since September 2018: Back-calculation of acid concentration using the reported CRM value as a “True value” with a standardization curve at three different concentrations (built-in standardization function in LabView program).; Standardization frequency: CRM run every three sample bottles.
