Simulated oil spills in Gulf of Mexico from 2015-03-01 to 2015-11-30 (NCEI Accession 0176683)

browse graphicPreview graphic
This data package contains oil spill simulations in different areas of the Gulf of Mexico. These spills vary where they are simulated, how much oil is being released into the environment, and when the oil is being released. The runs are based on the Navy Coastal Ocean Model (NCOM), a numerical ocean model that simulates the ambient ocean conditions at the time the spill was simulated.

More information specific to the spill settings and ambient conditions can be found in the "inputs.txt" file associated with each spill. That file is located in the same folder that the oil spill model outputs are.
Purpose This data was created to study the behavior of oil in the offshore environment. The results of this simulation were used to develop methods for oil spill response optimization.
