Global improved QuikSCAT weekly wind speed data and climatologies for 1999-2004 (NCEI Accession 0177404)

browse graphicPreview graphic
This dataset contains an improved QuikSCAT weekly wind dataset for coastal and high latitude applications, and associated climatologies. This dataset includes land and sea ice mask information adapted from the AVHRR Pathfinder sea surface temperature (SST) v5.0 and the Optimally Interpolated SST version 2 data sets, respectively. Additionally, near shore pixels originally contaminated by backscatter from land have been filled by several methods, including simple median filling, an inverse-distance weighted mean, and an objective analysis technique that considers the spatial structure of the wind speed data. The gap filling methods and QuikSCAT wind speed data were then evaluated by comparing with in situ wind speed measurements taken from near shore and open ocean buoys and marine weather stations.

These data are in .HDF format identified by Julian date.

Supplemental Information
QuikSCAT was launched on 19 June 1999 with an initial 3-year mission requirement. QuikSCAT was a "quick recovery" mission replacing the NASA Scatterometer (NSCAT), which failed prematurely in June 1997. QuikSCAT exceeded design expectations and continued to operate for over a decade before a bearing failure on its antenna motor ended QuikSCAT's capabilities to determine useful surface wind information on 23 November 2009. The QuikSCAT geophysical data record spans from 19 July 1999 to 21 November 2009.

The SeaWinds instrument on the QuikSCAT satellite measured global marine winds. However, microwave backscatter from land and ice limited the coverage and utility of QuikSCAT wind speed measurements near the coast and at high latitudes. This QuikSCAT weekly wind speed dataset was developed at the NOAA National Oceanographic Data Center (now part of the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information) to address limitations of the data.
Purpose For coastal and high latitude applications.
