This dataset contains benthic epifauna biomass and abundance data collected in the Chukchi Sea, U.S. Arctic during the 9 August - 3 September 2015 Arctic Marine Biodiversity Observing Network (AMBON) research cruise aboard the vessel Norseman II. The dataset contains two comma separated values (csv) files exported from Microsoft Excel. These data were generated from epifauna samples conducted using beam trawls during the research cruise. The data in the file named AMBON2015_epifauna_abundance_DWC.csv describes abundance per taxon of epibenthic invertebrates. The data in the file named AMBON2015_epifauna_biomass_DWC.csv describes biomass per taxon of epibenthic invertebrates. This dataset was transformed into a table structure using Darwin Core term names as column names.
The purpose of this dataset is to describe the epibenthic community in the study area in the Chukchi Sea, especially their species composition, abundance, and biomass.

Parameter or Variable: SPECIES COUNT PER SAMPLE (measured);
Units: grams per 1000 m2;
Observation Category: in situ;
Sampling Instrument: trawl;
Sampling and Analyzing Method: Epibenthic invertebrates and demersal fishes were collected with a plumb-staff beam trawl with a 2.26 m opening, with a 7 mm mesh net and a 4 mm cod end liner. Trawls were conducted during the night for 2-5 min duration at ~1.5 knots. Trawl distances ranged from 160 – 840 m, with an average of 373 m. Trawl hauls were rinsed, if necessary, and then sorted on board to the lowest taxonomic level possible. For invertebrate taxa that could not be identified on board, voucher specimens were preserved in 4% formaldehyde or 99% molecular-grade ethanol for later consultation with taxonomic experts. Most invertebrate identifications occurred to species or genus level, although taxonomic resolution for several phyla was low because of lack of expertise, especially Bryozoa, Hydrozoa and Porifera. In cases where morphologically distinct taxa within these phyla could be separated, we kept these as distinct taxa for the analyses. All invertebrate, except for colonial taxa, were enumerated; bulk wet weight was determined at the lowest taxonomic level using digital hanging scales. Trawl distance was assessed by depth recordings by a time-depth recorder (TDR, Star Oddi) attached to the net opening multiplied by trawling speed. Abundance and biomass for all taxa were then quantified for each haul as catch per unit effort (CPUE) based on trawled distance and width of net opening and trawling speed, represented as quantity (abundance or biomass) per 1000 m2.;
Data Quality Method: Accuracy was ensured by reviewing and editing the data in the field on a daily basis..

trawl
A fishing net that is dragged behind a boat. A wide range of
demersal (bottom) or pelagic (mid-water) species of fish are
taken by this fishing method which entails one or a pair of
vessels towing a large bag-shaped net either along the seafloor
or in mid-water.
