Coral Ecosystem Connectivity from Pulley Ridge to the Florida Keys: Moored Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler Time-Series Data from 2012-08-15 to 2015-06-24 (NCEI Accession 0181331)

browse graphicPreview graphic
Bottom-mounted, upward-facing, acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) were deployed at three locations (Northern Dry Tortugas, Southern Dry Tortugas and Pulley Ridge) across the southwest Florida shelf between 2012 and 2015. Each ADCP instrument recorded hourly measurements of near-surface and near-bottom water velocity (east/west component u, north/south component v, magnitude, and direction) and bottom temperature. A 40-hour low-pass filter (40HLP) was applied to the data, and vertically-integrated mean horizontal water velocity (VIMHWV) calculated.

Purpose These ADCP current velocity data were collected to support project physical and biophysical modeling efforts designed to evaluate the coral ecosystem connectivity between Pulley Ridge and the downstream reefs of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS). The project “Coral Ecosystem Connectivity: From Pulley Ridge to Florida Keys” is focused on investigating the role that the relatively healthy deep, light-dependent mesophotic coral ecosystems of Pulley Ridge may play in replenishing key fish species, such as grouper, and other organisms in the downstream reefs of the Florida Keys and Dry Tortugas. This interdisciplinary study is determining connectivity of specific reef species between Pulley Ridge and the Florida Keys, and describing the structure and determining the value of Pulley Ridge’s mesophotic coral ecosystems. Because of the well-documented decline of Florida’s reefs, it is important to identify, protect, and manage sources of larvae that can help sustain Florida’s reef ecosystems and the tourism economy that depends on it. The data in this accession were funded by the NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) under award NA11NOS4780045 to the Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) at the University of Miami, and by the NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research under awards NA09OAR4320073 and NA14OAR4320260 to the Cooperative Institute for Ocean Exploration, Research and Technology (CIOERT) at Florida Atlantic University – Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. Funding was also provided by NCCOS to NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) in Miami, FL, for processing and analysis.

  • Parameter or Variable: Water Velocity (measured); Units: cm/s; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: ADCP; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Bottom-mounted, upward-facing, acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) were deployed at three locations across the southwest Florida shelf between 2012 and 2015. The names, locations, and deployment periods of these oceanographic moorings are as follows. 1) PO-A ADCP: Northern Dry Tortugas; Latitude (decimal degrees): 24.7734; Longitude (decimal degrees): -83.0956; Water Depth (meters): 54.5; Deployment Period: 15-AUGUST-2012 to 23-JUNE-2015; PO-A was located just north of (outside of) the Tortugas Ecological Reserve North (TERN) in the northern Dry Tortugas. 2) PO-B ADCP: Southern Dry Tortugas; Latitude (decimal degrees): 24.4757; Longitude (decimal degrees): -83.1535; Water Depth (meters): 66.7; Deployment Period: 22-MARCH-2013 to 24-JUNE-2015; PO-B was located just west of (outside of) the Tortugas Ecological Reserve South (TERS) in the southern Dry Tortugas. 3) PO-C ADCP: Pulley Ridge; Latitude (decimal degrees): 24.7001; Longitude (decimal degrees): -83.6745; Water Depth (meters): 69.5; Deployment Period: 16-AUGUST-2012 to 20-JUNE-2015; PO-C was located at the southern end of the Pulley Ridge, inside the Pulley Ridge Habitat Area of Particular Concern (HAPC). Each ADCP instrument recorded hourly measurements of velocity (east/west component [u] in cm/s, north/south component [v] in cm/s, magnitude in cm/s, and direction [towards] in degrees): near-surface water; near-bottom; 40-hour low-pass filter (40HLP) near-surface water; 40HLP near-bottom; Vertically-Integrated Mean Horizontal Water Velocity (VIMHWV); VIMHWV 40HLP. Each ADCP instrument also recorded hourly measurements of: bottom temperature in degrees C (internal temperature thermistor inside the mADCP with a precision of ±0.4 °C and a resolution of 0.01 °C); 40HLP bottom temperature in degrees C; water depth in meters (PO-A and PO-C only); 40HLP water depth in meters (PO-A and PO-C only).; Data Quality Method: Each hourly velocity data point was corrected for local magnetic deviation. Velocity data were corrected using IRGF11 (Finley et al., 2010) coefficients provided by the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy's (IAGA) Division V Working Group V-MOD for Geomagnetic Field Modeling. Data were visually inspected to eliminate any near-surface side-lobe contamination issues and any low-quality issues associated with poor acoustic return..
