        abstract:  This dataset contains CTD, water quality and particle and zooplankton sample elemental (total C and N, C/N ratio) and isotopic (delta 13C, delta 15N) data collected during R/V Endeavor cruise EN496 in the northern Gulf of Mexico from 2011-07-03 to 2011-07-26. Particle and zooplankton samples were collected during cruise EN496 using a CTD-rosette and a MOCNESS. The objectives were to collect water column and benthic samples in the vicinity of the Mississippi River Plume, as well as, at/near active seeps. Elemental and isotopic data were collected at 18 stations, while CTD profiles were done at 51 locations. Elemental and isotopic data includes the delta 13C and 15N, total Nitrogen and Carbon and the C/N ratio. Hydrographic data was collected using a Sea-Bird SBE-9 and the data includes temperature, salinity, oxygen concentration, sound velocity, beam attenuation and transmission, sea level, Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR), fluorescence and surface irradiance.

            description:  MOCNESS is a much-improved, high-tech version of the humble sampling net. The letters in MOCNESS refer to the specific improvements: it's a Multiple Opening and Closing Net, with an Environmental Sensing System. As MOCNESS tows behind a research ship, each net can be opened and shut independently so that it samples a discrete patch of water. The researcher chooses exactly when by using the environmental sensing system. This is an array of sensors mounted on the instrument frame that relays water conditions up to the ship in real time. The data also help researchers match what they find in their sample to the physical properties of the seawater.

            description:  Photosynthetically Active Radiation Sensor The PAR sensor measures global solar radiation from 400 to 700 nm, which approximates the spectral band active in photosynthesis. The response of the instrument falls sharply to zero on either side of this band, and between 400 and 670 nm it increases monotonically from about 50% to 100%. There is no protective glass dome over the receiving surface. Irradiance from the sun passes through a small white visible bandpass filter/diffuser in the shape of a horizontal disk at the top of the instrument. Within the instrument radiation is directed through a series of colored glass filters and onto a silicon photodiode detector. The factory-supplied calibration converts the signal from the detector to a flux of photons in micro-mole (of photons) s-1 m-2. (One micro-mole equals 6.022 E17 photons.)
