        abstract:  This package contains a set of 12 monthly mean (MM) climatologies, one for each calendar month, and the maximum monthly mean (MMM) climatology. Each climatology has global coverage at 0.05-degree (5km) spatial resolution. The climatologies were derived from NOAA Coral Reef Watch's (CRW) CoralTemp Version 1.0 product and are based on the 1985-2012 time period of the CoralTemp data. They are used in deriving CRW's Daily Global 5km Satellite Coral Bleaching Heat Stress Monitoring Product Suite Version 3.1. MMs are used to derive the SST Anomaly product, and the MMM is used to derive CRW's Coral Bleaching HotSpot, Degree Heating Week, and Bleaching Alert Area products.
        purpose:  The NOAA Coral Reef Watch (CRW) program bases the majority of its coral bleaching heat stress monitoring products on sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies. An SST climatology is required to generate any SST anomaly product. CoralTemp was designed specifically for this purpose. It is currently the only 5km (0.05 degree) spatial resolution, daily, foundation SST satellite product that is fully consistent from 1985 to the present. This means that any climatology derived from CoralTemp data will be compatible with near real-time SST input data. Hence CoralTemp can be used to produce more reliable SST anomaly products, such as Coral Reef Watch's daily global 5km SST Anomaly, Coral Bleaching HotSpot, and Degree Heating Week products. This is the first time since its inception that Coral Reef Watch has been able to produce anomaly products with climatologies that are directly related to the near real-time data, thereby enhancing the performance and accuracy of its coral bleaching heat stress monitoring products.

            description:  Advanced Along Track Scanning Radiometer The AATSR is carried on the European Space Agency satellite Envisat. The primary scientific objective of the AATSR is to establish continuity of the ATSR-1 and ATSR-2 observations of precise Sea Surface Temperature (SST) providing a 10 year near-continuous data set at the levels of accuracy required (0.3K or better) for climate research. The second objective is to develop and exploit the science of quantitative remote-sensing of land surfaces, particularly vegetation, through the use of the improved visible-wavelength atmospheric correction that is achievable with AATSR's two-angle view. The land and cloud measurement objectives are met through the use of an additional visible focal plane assembly, which leads to indications of * vegetation biomass; * vegetation moisture; * vegetation health and growth stage. These parameters are used to derive global vegetation indices, using established relationships, modified to incorporate the added information from AATSR's two-angle view. The visible channels are also used to measure cloud parameters, like water/ice discrimination and particle size distribution. The principle of removing atmospheric effects in sea surface temperature measurements by viewing the sea surface from two angles is the basis of the family of (A)ATSR instruments. The SST objectives are met through the use of thermal infrared channels (centred on 1.6 microns, 3.7 microns, 10.7 microns, and 12 microns), identical to those on ATSR-1 and 2, plus the (A)ATSR's unique two-angle view of the Earth's surface. Atmospheric modelling for ERS-1 has shown that ATSR, with its thermal IR channels and two-angle viewing geometry, can achieve a global accuracy in SST of better than 0.5 K. As with the AATSR thermal-infrared channels, the measurement philosophy with respect to the visible channels is to develop and exploit a capability for making accurate quantitative measurements of radiation from the Earth surface, using an on-board calibration system for basic radiometric accuracy, also using a two-angle viewing technique to obtain accurate atmospheric corrections. The principle two visible channels are at 0.87 microns and 0.67 microns respectively and provide measurements of vegetation index in the same way as AVHRR. With the atmospheric correction improvement, the system has the capability for making global measurements at 1 × 1 km resolution at nadir. An additional visible channel at 0.55 microns, to indicate, from chlorophyll content, the growth stage and health of vegetation, has also be incorporated. By means of a servo driven, two-axis gimbaled mirror scanning system in conjunction with a Cassegrain telescope, the Imager's multispectral channels can simultaneously sweep an 8-kilometer (5 statute mile) north-to-south swath along an east-to-west/west-to-east path, at a rate of 20 degrees (optical) east-west per second. This translates into being able to scan a 3000 by 3000 km (1864 by 1864 miles) "box" centered over the United States in just 41 seconds. The actual scanning sequence takes places by sweeping in an East-West direction, stepping in the North-South direction, than sweeping back in a West-East direction, stepping North-South, sweeping East-West, and so on. The Imager consists of electronics, power supply, and sensor modules. The sensor module containing the telescope, scan assembly, and detectors, is mounted on a baseplate outside the main structure of the spacecraft, together with shields and louvers for thermal control. The electronics module provides redundant circuitry and performs command, control, and signal processing functions; it also serves as a structure for mounting and interconnecting the electronic boards for proper heat dissipation. The power supply module contains the converters, fuses, and power control for interfacing with the spacecraft electrical power subsystem. The meteorological mission includes an imager giving nominal hourly full Earth disk images in five spectral bands (one visible, four infrared). MTSAT are spin stabilized satellites. With this system images are built up by scanning with a mirror that is tilted in small successive steps from the north pole to south pole at a rate such that on each rotation of the satellite an adjacent strip of the Earth is scanned. It takes about 25 minutes to scan the full Earth's disk. This builds a picture 10,000 pixels for the visible images (1.25 km resolution) and 2,500 pixels (4 km resolution) for the infrared images.             description:  The NPOESS Preparatory Project (NPP) was renamed to Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) in honor of Verner E. Suomi, University of Wisconsin meteorologist, widely recognized as the "Father of Satellite Meteorology." Suomi NPP is the first next generation polar-orbiting satellite in the JPSS series, and is considered the bridge between NOAA's legacy polar satellite fleet, NASA's Earth observing missions and JPSS constellation. Launched in October 2011, Suomi NPP boasts five state-of-the-art instruments: (1) VIIRS, (2) CrIS, (3) ATMS, (4) OMPS, and (5) CERES FM5— which will be the similar instruments carried on JPSS-1. It has design life of five years and was launched with a Delta-II Mission Launch Vehicle from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California.
