Stream discharge, turbidity, and suspended sediment concentration in Fagaʻalu watershed, American Samoa from 2012-01-12 to 2016-11-15 (NCEI Accession 0191818)

browse graphicPreview graphic
Data on water level (stage), turbidity (T), and suspended sediment concentration (SSC) were collected in the Fagaʻalu watershed in American Samoa from 2012-2016. Stage data were combined with a rating curve to calculate discharge (Q, m3/s). Monitoring sites included a forested site (F1: stage, T, SSC), a site downstream of a quarry (F2: T, SSC), and a site upstream of the discharge point to the ocean (F3: stage, T, SSC). Grab samples of water for SSC were collected at F1, F2, F3, and some supplemental sites. See Messina and Biggs (2016) and Holst-Rice et al (2016) for details.

Processing Steps
  • Parameter or Variable: Stream discharge (calculated); Units: cubic meters per second; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Pressure transducer; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Pressure transducer readings of water level (Stage) were recorded every 5 or 15 minutes. Discharge calculated using a rating curve according to Messina and Biggs, 2016, Journal of Hydrology v 538 pp 726-742.; Data Quality Method: Rating curves were developed using observed stage and discharge to calibrate a hydraulic model (see Messina and Biggs 2016). Discharge values were checked against the site downstream (F3) using double mass curve analysis. The stage was adjusted manually (field "Stage.corr.cm") where needed to maintain consistency in the double mass curves..
  • Parameter or Variable: Turbidity (measured); Units: NTU; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Turbidity Meter; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Turbidity meters were installed at F1, F2 (2016 only), and F3 and recorded turbidity every 5-15 minutes. Several different models were used over the course of the project; see Messina and Biggs 2016 for details.; Data Quality Method: Turbidity meters were checked against standards at the beginning and end of deployment periods, and sent to the manufacturer for recalibration at the end of each campaign. Quality flags are "O" = outlier; "B"=bad value, unknown reason", "S"=sunlight artifact..
  • Parameter or Variable: Suspended sediment concentration (measured); Units: mg/L; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: Manual grab or autosampler; Sampling and Analyzing Method: Water samples were collected using manual grab with a 1L wide-mouthed bottle, or with an autosampler. SSC was determined using gravimetric methods (see Messina 2016 and Messina and Biggs 2016 for details).; Data Quality Method: Duplicates were run on some samples to check for consistency..
