The dataset contains 17 depth profiles from 20-1000 m depth on the West Florida Shelf. Parameters include aragonite saturation state, total alkalinity, DIC, temperature and salinity. The data were collected using a CTD rosette aboard a NOAA-led research expedition in August 2017 entitled ‘Southeast Deep Coral Initiative: Exploring Deep-Sea Corals Ecosystems of the Southeast US’. The NOAA-led survey explored deep-sea coral habitat along West Florida shelf, using the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Odysseus aboard NOAA Ship Nancy Foster.

Purpose These data were collected to support the study of Lophelia pertusa coral reefs, which are considered essential fish habitat in the Gulf of Mexico. Deep water corals are sensitive to carbonate chemistry. The data provided here can serve as a baseline for August 2017 to understand how aragonite saturation state is changing over the short and long term.

  • Parameter or Variable: TEMPERATURE - BOTTOM WATER [WATER TEMPERATURE] (measured); Units: degrees C; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: CTD.
  • Parameter or Variable: SALINITY (measured); Units: psu; Observation Category: in situ; Sampling Instrument: CTD.
  • Parameter or Variable: tCO2 [DISSOLVED INORGANIC CARBON (DIC)] (measured); Units: umol/kg; Observation Category: laboratory analysis; Sampling Instrument: Coulometer for DIC measurement; Sampling and Analyzing Method: The lab used a closed cell acidification module and procedure to convert all dissolved TCO2 in the sample to CO2 gas which was then analyzed in a UIC coulometer. This measurement is independent of temperature..
