abstract: This dataset contains the following data types from the Coos Bay Estuary, Oregon collected 2017-2019: (1) water-column profiles of salinity, temperature, pressure, and turbidity collected using a conductivity/temperature/depth (CTD) sensor outfitted with a peripheral optical backscatter sensor (OBS) used to measure turbidity (2) water-column velocity data collected using a vessel-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) (3) time-series measurements of water level, temperature, and turbidity collected using small instruments mounted in near-bed moorings and a piling (four files total) (4) grain-size distributions of seabed grab samples and short push cores. Data (1) were collected throughout the estuary from the research vessel Pluteus or research vessel Pugettia from the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology, using an RBR profiling CTD with OBS (two instruments were alternated), throughout the project period. Data (2) were collected using an RDI 600 kHz ADCP during a January 2018 survey from the research vessel Pugettia. The ADCP was mounted on the rear of the vessel with integrated Hemisphere V104s GPS receiver. Data (3) were collected using RBR CTDs with OBSs mounted on small moorings deployed on the seabed or affixed to a piling. Data (4) were collected using a petite ponar sampler or grab sampler from the research vessel Pugettia or research vessel Pluteus, or using short push cores collected via personal watercraft. Data were analyzed by laser diffraction sizers at the WHOI, OSU, or IU labs. Data are in NetCDF.
purpose: These data were collected to support the study of water and sediment dynamics in Coos Bay Estuary, Oregon in conjunction with a hydrodynamic and sediment modeling study. This project was done in collaboration with the South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve and supported by the NOAA NERRS program under project NAI4NOS4190145.

description: Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler The Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) measures currents beneath a ship while underway. Sound signals sent from the moving ship bounce back to receivers aboard the ship. This provides a profile of water movement relative to the ship-precise modern navigation, allowing the ship's motion to be subtracted from the data. These devices are also used on moorings and profilers and, along with acoustic backscattering, measure animal biomass. Particles in the path of the sound waves, mostly plankton, reflect a small part of the sound energy back toward receivers, allowing researchers to make remote estimates of the sizes and numbers of animals present in the water column. Before the 1970's, the most technologically advanced instrument used to measure water velocity was known as a Doppler speed log. This evolved into the first commercial ADCP, produced in the mid-1970's, which used averaging. Later in the 1970's, the first vessel-mounted ADCP was developed to measure water velocity more accurately and to allow measurement in range cells over a depth profile. As instruments evolved, so did new techniques in Doppler signal processing. Initially, Doppler speed logs used simple analog signal processing methods, which are still used in some commercial speed logs today. However, the first ADCPs incorporated analog-to-digital signal conversion over a narrow communication bandwidth. Around 1990, this technique was developed into broadband signal processing. Since then, broadband ADCPs have been able to generate very accurate, real-time velocity measurements.
