This archived Paleoclimatology Study is available from the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), under the World Data Service (WDS) for Paleoclimatology. The associated NCEI study type is Coral. The data include parameters of corals and sclerosponges with a geographic location of Kiribati, Central Pacific Ocean. The time period coverage is from 12 to -43 in calendar years before present (BP). See metadata information for parameter and study location details. Please cite this study when using the data.

Supplemental Information
STUDY NOTES: Coral stable isotope (d18O, d13C) and Sr/Ca data from Kiritimati. Stable isotope data by-depth for long core Kiritimati-1 added 4/8/2021.
ABSTRACT SUPPLIED BY ORIGINATOR: Variations in central and eastern equatorial sea surface temperatures are linked to extratropical climate changes by atmospheric heat and moisture fluxes in so-called ‘teleconnection’ patterns. Estimates of sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly may be derived from the isotopic composition and minor-element chemistry of aragonite formed by annually banded reef corals. Here we reconstruct anomalies in central equatorial Pacific SSTs for 1938-93 from the stable oxygen isotope (δ18O) composition of a coral collected at Kiritimati (Christmas) Island, Republic of Kiribati (157.3° W, 2° N). We recover not only the regional anomaly in SST, but also extratropical climate information in climatically teleconnected regions.
Purpose Records of past climate and ocean environment derived from stable isotope, trace metal, and other measurements made on corals and sclerosponges. Parameter keywords describe what was measured in this dataset. Additional summary information can be found in the abstracts of papers listed in the dataset citations.
