Supplemental Information
STUDY NOTES: Planktonic foraminiferal (Globigerinoides ruber) measurements of Mg/Ca and associated calibrated SST values using the Anand et al. (2003) calibration for the 250-350um size fraction (without a pre-assumed pre-exponential coefficient). Each sample is based on 35-40 individuals of the G. ruber morphotype picked from the 250-315um size fraction. Sample preparation follows the method of Barker et al. (2003) and Mg/Ca determination by ICP-OES that of de Villiers et al. (2002).
ABSTRACT SUPPLIED BY ORIGINATOR: The position of the southern boundary of the Pacific warm pool is shown to have been stable since the early Pleistocene, based upon a planktic foraminiferal Mg/Ca-derived reconstruction of subtropical sea surface temperature in the Coral Sea. This contrasts with previous reconstructions showing warm pool contraction from the north and east and means that the early Pleistocene warm pool was more hemispherically asymmetric than its present configuration. The latter was not established until ~1Ma, supporting a strengthening of the northern Hadley Cell, which was not replicated in its southern counterpart, prior to the Mid-Pleistocene Transition.
Purpose Records of past climate and ocean circulation derived from marine sediments. Parameter keywords describe what was measured in this dataset. Additional summary information can be found in the abstracts of papers listed in the dataset citations.
