FILE TYPE 026 - MARINE MAMMAL SIGHTING 2 - 1/19/77 VERSION

THIS FORMAT IS DESIGNED TO SUPPORT STUDIES OF BIOLOGICAL POPULATIONS AND
ECOSYSTEMS THAT ARE SUBJECT TO IMPACT FROM OIL DEVELOPMENT. INFORMATION ON
DENSITY, GROUP DISTRIBUTIONS, MIGRATORY ROUTES AND BREEDING LOCALES OBTAINED
FROM SHIP OR AIRCRAFT SURVEYS CAN BE DERIVED FROM THIS FORMAT. THE STRUCTURE OF
THE FORMAT DIFFERS FROM FILE TYPE 027 - MARINE MAMMAL SIGHTING-1 IN THAT ANY
NUMBER OF GROUPS OF MAMMALS SIGHTED ARE RECORDED WITHIN A STATION WITH NO
SPECIFIC LOCATION FOR EACH GROUP SIGHTED. FOR FILE TYPE 027, INDIVIDUAL
SIGHTING LOCATIONS ARE RECORDED AS WELL AS BEGINNING AND END LOCATIONS OF EACH
STATION OR PORTION OF A TRANSECT.

THE FORMAT CONSISTS OF SIX RECORDS FOR REPORTING TRANSECT AND ENVIRONMENTAL
INFORMATION FOR EACH FLIGHT OR STATION NUMBER, MULTIPLE ICE ENTRIES TO REPORT
CHANGES IN ICE CHARACTERISTICS WITHIN A SEGMENT OF A FLIGHT OR STATION. MAMMAL
SIGHTING INFORMATION FOR EACH TAXONOMIC SPECIES SIGHTED INCLUDES TOTAL NUMBER,
NUMBER OF PUPS, NUMBER OF GROUPS AND THE DISTRIBUTION OF GROUPS WITHIN A
STATION. A RECORD FOR TEXT ALSO IS AVAILABLE.

ALL RECORDS IN THIS FORMAT ARE 80 COLUMNS IN LENGTH. THIS FILE IS SORTED BY
STATION NUMBER OR FLIGHT NUMBER AND SEQUENCE NUMBER TO OBTAIN THE PROPER
SEQUENCE OF RECORDS.

THE FIRST NINE COLUMNS FOR ALL RECORDS ARE TO BE USED FOR FILE TYPE (COLUMNS
1-3) AND FILE IDENTIFIER (COLUMNS 4-9). THE FILE IDENTIFIER, TO BE ASSIGNED BY
THE ORIGNATOR, IS A UNIQUE ORIGINATOR ID FOR EACH DATA SUBMISSION. AFTER
SUBMISSION, THE NODC REASSIGNS TO THIS FIELD A UNIQUE NODC IDENTIFIER FOR
INTERNAL USE.
