Surface METAR Monthly Airways Extract (MAE), 2014 Update
The Surface METAR Monthly Airways Extracts (MAE) is an unbroken series of weather observations beginning in September 1992 and ending in February 2008. In addition to a Summary of the Day, these updated files will also include hourly observations, weather duration, maximum short duration precipitation and daily remarks to further enrich the record. The MAE data files are reformatted according to the TD-6407 Documentation from two different source files, which will both be archived as sources: 1) From September 1992-June 1996 data is reprocessed from ASOS-only data (Automated Surface Observing System) FORTRAN direct access files. ASOS files are very similar to the MAE data but will require some reformatting to agree with DSI-6407 documentation. 2) From July 1996-February 2008, data is reprocessed from merged FORTRAN direct access files (index file included). This collection of FORTRAN files were originally created by merging Airways and METAR feeds via NWS GTS, digitized data from paper forms, MAPSO (Microcomputer Assisted Paperless Surface Observations), and ASOS (Automated Surface Observing System) data.

- 2015-04-22T00:00:00 - NOAA created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) by merging NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC), and National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), including the National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC), per the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015, Public Law 113-235. NCEI launched publicly on April 22, 2015.
